Mudbox and Mari

Post by cochtl »

Heyo all,

I just got this stuff to try out today and so far it's been pretty cool playing around with it, understanding the components and all. I have to ask though, is there a definitive pipeline for bringing in Mari UDIM files? Can I also do the same with Mudbox generated PTEX files? There are a lot of assets made with MB so far that make use of ptex, so I'd like to see what options there are if any in using those, before rethinking our pipeline. Thanks!

Hello Cochey,

Using Multi-Tile Uv’s is pretty straightforward with Amplify Texture 2. Simply add the first tile to the appropriate texture slot (e.g. Diffuse Channel) and build the virtual texture by hitting Ctrl+S\Save Scene, alternatively you can rebuild/update the Virtual Texture in its inspector Tab.

That’s all you need to do, AT2 will automatically add the entire tile collection to the virtual texture.

It fully supports UDIM, Mudbox and Zbrush Tiles, however it does not support Ptex directly. You will find that UV tiles allow for better performance and overall accuracy when compared to Realtime Ptex.

This might change in the future, when the time comes we will definitely look into it.

In the meantime you can easily convert Ptex to UV tiles, check out this quick tutorial.
Area - Ptex to UV

We plan to improve the workflow with MARI, our import proxy folder should “fix” most of the Unity texture import annoyances, more about this at a later stage.

Let me know if you have any additional questions, I would be happy to help.

All the best,

Ok that works too! That conversion isn't difficult, I was just curious if ptex was supported is all [that is like the next step, for games]

It’s a cool technique, I would personally love to see it more in real-time applications. Unfortunately the overhead is quite high, until the hardware or the technique itself catches up we might have to be contempt with simpler scenes.

Hopefully the time will come sooner than we anticipate. (fingers crossed)
